5 Steps for Busy-ness into Business

“I spent all week busy doing stuff, lots of stuff, but nothing really happened.”

“I spent so much time on social media and answering emails”

If this sounds like you, I suspect that while you feel overworked and streeeeeetched to the brink of busy, you don’t actually have the new business or new leads your business needs at the end of the month.

Busy-ness is an infection. It’s actually leaving money on the table, losing it completely, and creating a vast array of excuses that seem plausible but are still excuses.

So this is all about taking you from busy-ness into business… with a glitter-cannon roadmap that allows everyone to sparkle.

STEP 1: GUT CHECK
I think it’s important for entrepreneurs to gut check themselves on whether it’s busy work or business work. This is especially true with a lot of the people that I work with, the big visionary dreamers that have a new idea every single day. It’s essential to corral them just a little bit and find out which ideas have merit. Dreams are great but if you’re not doing them for the right reason, it may not be your dream to do.

STEP 2: SHARE & EMPOWER YOUR TEAM
The other thing, especially as you start to bring on people that you’re working with, is that having a strategic plan for your business, allows people to see the inside of your mind and understand the importance of something and how they can contribute to it. This is about empowering the people around you to understand what success means to you and run with it. And you can just get out of the way and let them do that.

STEP 3: BUILD IN IMPLEMENTATION & INTEGRATION
Implementation is putting into action the plan. Integration is all the logistical pieces that need to be put into place so the implementation can actually happen. Often we plan for implementation and forget to plan for the integration necessary. Do both and watch your productivity and process flourish.

STEP 4: PLAYBOOK & ROADMAP
Your business plan is two things: playbook and roadmap. The roadmap is the guiding path you are on. The playbook is how you are going to get there. Your roadmap looks like a purpose, a mission, a commitment to serve. Your playbook may include the ways in which you will do those things. Marketing plans, client processes, budget forecasting, metrics and analytics.

STEP 5: ACTUALLY USE IT
This is not just a “make work” busy project. If you want to remove the busy-ness and work in your business, you have to actually put your strategic plan into place and use the damn thing!

The truth is, business at it’s very best, is busy. Busy often = money. You want to create a business that is busy with clients vs busy with social media overwhelm, too many programs or not enough staff connection. Shift to what actually moves the needle in 2021.
