Mentorship Matters

What do you know about running a successful business? It’s rarely (if ever) taught in school and quite frankly, most of us only learned out of necessity.

I get it. You wear a million hats and are expected to be the master of all of them. CEO’s and Founders especially fall into this category.

I am the Boss.

I should know how to do this!

I have to know how to do this before I can hire someone to do it!

Who says?

Did they teach you how to run a business in school? No, they certainly did not.

Did they teach you how to make strategic decisions? No, again.

So how else are you expected to learn?

Leadership is often thought of as some magician who can see it all, do it all, be it all.

Ugh As If

Why is it that we as business owners expect ourselves to know all the things?

To have all the answers?

To make all of the decisions in a vacuum?

It’s ludicrous!

I’ve been privileged to work for, and with, many different people across multiple levels of businesses – from small business owners to multimillion dollar companies – and you know what’s always the same?

Everyone needs a mentor. A coach. A consultant.

Someone who has done the darn thing and knows how to do it faster, smarter, and better than you do. Someone who can give you perspective, direction, advice, feedback, and proven processes that work.

The very best leaders know their strengths and their weaknesses and hire accordingly.

Want to support yourself in business? Hire. The. Right. People. And LEARN.

Everything you can from them; as quickly as you can.

Allow someone else who has mastered the solution to your problem to be the one who guides you and helps you grow into a higher level of yourself.

As business owners, we often “fake it till we make it” and I’ll be the first to say – it works – but it takes a heck of a lot longer.

Cut out the angst. Nip the frustration in the a**. Choose self-care by hiring the best people to help you grow with ease and finesse.

Find your Obi-wan Kenobi…

Locate your Gandalf…

Your Uncle Iroh…

Go be a badass at what you are freaking amazing at and leave the rest to mentors, coaches and consultants who can get you there.
